The Real Life of the G - Identity & Direction Center
The Real Life of the HD Centers - A co-authored Human Design series with 10 voices
This is your inner compass. It’s where you draw things to you. It helps you to discover direction. And… The G Centre is where your sense of self, your capacity for love, and your direction in life all live together.
About half of us have this center Defined. It’s like you have a north star that keeps you oriented even when things get complicated. The other half have it undefined or open. Your identity and direction can feel more fluid, more influenced by environment and the people nearby. More of a scenic road trip where the various destinations are revealed as you motor.
No matter your style of compass, we’re also shaped by the relationships, environments, and life experiences… then there’s the other parts of your design. So we’ve footnoted each contributor’s Type, Profile, and Definition as some extra background for those of you who love to go deeper.
And this is our invitation to you. While we share our stories, we know that what you hear within yourself as you read is truly the gold.

I sat across from him in a conference room with a stream running through the floor — real water, moving under glass, inside a builder’s office on the eastern coast I’d decided to call home. I set two binders on the table between us. Years of collected images. Pencil sketches of home layouts. The double vanity and extra-large soaking tub in the master bathroom.
My heart was really hurting then — by the life partner I hadn’t yet found, by the motherhood I’d chosen not to pursue. I had never built anything like this in my life, and on paper, none of what I was about to do made any sense. But I was done waiting for my life to start according to someone else’s standard. I knew what my heart was saying, and I was ready to live from it.
That one call — to a custom builder who specialized in waterfront homes — became the first devotional act: no longer a wish or a hope, but an action backed by love. I literally danced in the street after that first meeting. I didn’t know yet how right that instinct was.
The builder introduced me to a realtor who specialized in exactly the kind of land I was imagining. She, in turn, introduced me to a mortgage banker who made the complex financing feel simple and doable. For six months, the realtor and I spent weekends driving to lots I hadn’t known existed, each one narrowing me closer to the place where I’d eventually build.
I’ve always had a pretty clear sense of who I am, and who I’m not, but not always where I’m going.
I didn’t have the entire plan for the dream beach house to start. It was shown to me, one devotional step at a time, by staying in motion toward what I loved.
My Identity Center is completely defined — I consistently broadcast from it rather than search for it. Two gates activate that broadcast: Gate 25, Universal Love, and Gate 46, Love of the Body. Together they’ve always been teaching me to keep my heart open (especially after it has been hurt) and to keep tuning in to what I love.
Here’s what I find noteworthy: I have none of the Direction gates of this Center (1, 2, 7 & 13) in my natal design, though my Chiron Cycle brought me the gift of Gate 13 – The Listener. When I’m around people who have any of these gates activated, I feel a greater sense of ease in finding a clear direction.
It wasn’t until I began to understand myself through my design that I could clearly see that for me, it’s love broadcasting first — love for my body, for living fully in that body, for life and the people in it.
When I return to that love, my direction becomes clear.
When that love expands into service for others, an expanded direction for my purpose follows.
The Identity Center asks us all to contemplate three questions: who am I / what do I love / where am I going?
For me, the first two have mostly expressed themselves naturally. The third — direction — never came from a preconceived plan. It came from tending faithfully to the first two.

I recently spoke with Erica Voell, creator of Unfolding: Letters from the Middle of Becoming, as one of her live guests for her Summer of Self-Love series. In our conversation, you’ll hear me share about my breakthrough moment with Gate 46 (Love of the Body) – when a question was posed to me that landed in my body like Truth and has never left.

I’m building out some new mini-teaching topics inside my 12-month signature program – the HER frequency® circle – that feels really “juicy” right now. This is a facilitated, intimate group experience, built on the foundations of mindset, identity, consciousness, frequency, embodiment, and human design. This program is currently in the middle of its inaugural year, and the founding members are helping to co-create the most beautiful and transformative experience for conscious becoming. I’m excited to open the doors again later this year!
What’s it like to finally know your identity?

I spent a long time trying to solve something that wasn’t actually a problem. I just didn’t know that yet.
For most of my life, I didn’t know who I was.
Sounds strange, maybe. But it’s true.
I always took on the energy, the personality and the direction of whoever I was around. Especially close friendships and later in my life, romantic relationships. It was like I absorbed the people around me and became them. I took on their moods, their ways of being … and their sense of who I should be … without even realizing I was doing it.
And I got called out for it, which made it feel like a character flaw. Like I couldn’t think for myself. Like something was fundamentally wrong about me. I heard the message that I was too sensitive, too easily influenced, too gullible … and ultimately, not enough (or that’s how I interpreted it at least).
The external judgment landed on top of an internal, ongoing confusion about who I actually was. I believed that something was inherently wrong about me and my core identity for a long time was, “I have no idea who I am.”
I spent years in self-discovery (more like decades). I read the books, did the work and took all the personality assessments but I never quite landed on a solid feeling of knowing who I was. I kept trying to go back to early childhood and who I naturally was then before all the conditioning happened. Every time I thought I figured it out, I’d be back in the confusion again. I decided that I just didn’t fit anything and that I was my own unique personality.
What I didn’t know was that I was designed this way and that I am my own unique personality.
When I discovered human design and learned about my undefined G center (the identity and direction center), something shifted for me.
It felt like relief and everything just made sense.
The morphing didn’t mean there was something wrong with me. It was sensitivity. I was picking up the identity and direction of the people around me, the way a satellite picks up a signal. It wasn’t a flaw in my character. It was how I was wired.
All the searching and all the years of trying to land on a fixed sense of self and never quite getting there wasn’t a failure either. I’m not designed to have a fixed identity.
I’m designed to flow, to move through varied roles and expressions and to step into others’ shoes in a way that people with defined centers simply can’t.
That sensitivity to the environment, the thing I’d been ashamed of for so long, is actually a gift. It’s what allows me to offer real, loving guidance because I’ve felt it all.
I work now with couples and individuals who are doing the real underneath work, the identity work, the self-understanding work, the work that changes everything about how you show up in your relationship. Human design is a central part of how I do that. Because when you understand how you’re designed, you stop trying to fix yourself for things that were never broken.
That’s the thing nobody tells you. You’re not broken and there’s nothing wrong with you. When you understand that and see how you’re designed (and how your partner is designed), everything changes.
I’m not searching anymore. I know who I am. I do still morph … but in a very different way, with a very different perspective.
What’s flavoring your Substack these days?
I’m so excited about starting a series on the gates in human design. When you understand how you’re designed and who you are as an individual, it makes a huge difference in your relationship. So, we’re going to explore what the gates are, what each one means and how it translates into relationships. I’ll also offer practical ideas to make it real in your life.
What’s hot in your world right now?
I help couples and individuals in relationships get the connection back that they want so badly. I do that in a holistic way through my Connected Relationship Method and I use human design as a key tool. I recently decided to make human design front and center in what I talk about though. I’m so passionate about it. I believe that it’s essential for all humans to know their design and I believe it’s key in relationships. It’s a central piece of all the elements of my method. And I can’t stop talking about it!
What was the key to helping her find herself?

Ruth came to me at 61, convinced something was wrong with her. Not in a small way. Wrong at the root.
She told me she’d been a wife in Bergen. A homemaker, caring for her husband and three kids. She loved it. Then in Oslo, she became a different woman. She no longer had the same desires as before the divorce, which, by the way, wasn’t her fault. In Oslo, she met a new man. He loved literature, so now she loved literature. Her new friends took classes at the University, so now she did too. She described it with quiet horror. “I don’t have a self,” she said. “I’ve just been whoever the room needed.” Her old friends in Bergen said she’s changed.
She’d spent decades building that case against herself. The friends who said she’d changed. Her sister, who called her a chameleon and didn’t mean it kindly. The career she left twice because the person who chose it no longer seemed to exist. Everyone else has a center of gravity, she decided - and I’m missing mine.
I listened to her, then showed her her bodygraph.
The G center. The diamond in the middle. The seat of identity, direction, and love. Completely open. Not one gate was lit. She braced, certain I was about to confirm the verdict.
I told her the opposite. The fixed self she’d hunted her whole life was never hers to find. Not because she was broken. Because she was built to be moved. She was in Human Design University for a PHD in Identity.
A completely open G doesn’t generate identity from the inside. It takes it from where you stand and who you stand with. Right place, right people, right direction. It isn’t a flaw in the system. It is the system. She’d spent a lifetime trying to manufacture a self in a vacuum, then punishing herself for failing at something impossible.
None of her versions was a lie. They were authentic responses to where she was. The problem was never that she changed. It was being told that changing meant she was hollow.
I asked her one question. “When have you felt most like yourself?” She didn’t name a time like most of my clients would. She named a place. A friend’s kitchen on the West Coast. A particular table, a particular light. And she cried, because she realized that the answer was never going to come from inside her. It was going to come from her interacting at the right table.
So I gave her a new job. Not “find yourself.” The opposite. Notice the rooms. Where you expand, where you shrink. Which tables make you feel like someone. For most people, environment is background noise. For you, it’s the whole instrument panel. Place isn’t your backdrop. It’s your compass.
It sounds like a downgrade, choosing your life by where you feel like yourself. It isn’t. She’d just been flying without instruments, calling herself a bad pilot.
The last time we spoke, she’d moved. Back to that coast, that light, that kind of (kitchen) table. No new identity announced. She just said she felt, for the first time she could remember, like she was in the right room.
That’s what coming home looks like for a completely open Identity. Not the day you finally know who you are. The day you stop demanding you should have known, and let the right place tell you.

Where Human Design meets real life
There is no shortage of Human Design content. What's been missing is the lived version. This series brings together ten women, each sharing their real experience of a defined, undefined, or open center. The kind of story where you see your own reflection through someone else's life, notice what matches, what doesn't, and learn from both. This is what it looks like in daily life.
